About Us

Our Mission in Africa

Serenity House Africa is committed to breaking the cycle of poverty and vulnerability for children across Uganda and the DRC. We believe every child deserves safety, education, and the opportunity to reach their full potential.

Founded as a Colorado-based nonprofit, Serenity House Africa focuses on creating sustainable solutions for Africa's most vulnerable children. We work directly with communities in Uganda and the DRC to provide safe housing, quality education, and protection from exploitation. Through partnerships with local organizations and dedicated supporters, we're building a foundation for lasting change in these children's lives.

Grace Ushindi

Founder and Executive Director

The heart behind Serenity House Africa began with our Executive Director, Grace Ushindi. In 2017, Grace began personally supporting homeless and vulnerable children in her community—using her own limited income to pay for school tuition, uniforms, books, and daily needs. She grew up in the Congo, fled to Uganda before coming to the USA when she was 21 years old. Here in the States, she learned English, got her degree in Social Work, started her career at Children’s Hospital. During this time, she also founded Serenity House Africa as the vulnerable children in East Africa remained heavy on her heart.

What started as a small, personal act of compassion grew into a life-changing mission. Over the years, Grace built relationships, secured land, and created opportunities for children who otherwise had none. Her faith, resilience, and commitment to serving others laid the foundation for what is now Serenity House Africa.

Today, her vision continues to guide the organization—providing not just support, but hope, dignity, and a future for every child served.

How do you ensure donations reach the children?

We work directly with trusted local partners and community leaders in Uganda and the Congo to ensure transparency and accountability; all who we connect with weekly at a minimum. All funds are tracked and documented, with regular updates provided to donors about specific projects and their progress. We maintain low overhead costs to maximize the impact of every dollar donated.

What makes private education so important for these children?

Schooling is much different in East Africa than most other parts of the world.  In Eastern Congo, roughly 2/3rds of children are not in school and Uganda is not much better.  This is due to families not being able to afford tuition or even school supplies and uniforms.  We work to eliminate those barriers.
